Susana Soares (S. Soares) and Rosa Pérez-Gregorio (R. Pérez-Gregorio) are the head of BioProt group, a part from the FoodPhenoLab group at REQUIMTE/LAQV. They started this journey by being awarded an ERC Starting Grant (GA 101040462) and an Horizon Europe project (GA 101084344) as Coordinators.

Their research facilities are located at the Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto in a close collaboration with the University of Vigo.

S. Soares and R. Pérez-Gregorio are motivated to change the current view in food science research through groundbreaking and multidisciplinary approaches. Devoted to different, yet complementary, research lines they believe that as the world faces the daunting challenges of climate change and sustainability, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is an urgent need to re-evaluate our current food system. To create a sustainable food system, we must focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing waste, and ensuring equitable access to healthy, nutritious foods. One crucial component of this transformation is research into the interactions between proteins and polyphenols, with all the potential outcomes through all the food chain value. With innovative research and bold action, it is their believe that we can create a food system that supports both human health and the health of our planet.

Our team is young and dynamic, formed by six post-doctoral researchers, five PhD students, three master students and 5 research fellows.
