Collaboration in InsectERA

The new era for insect products!

The InsectERA Agenda brings alternative food/nutritional solutions that will respond to the sector's new needs, such as the increase in world population, climate change, and food waste. Thus, it contributes to the green transaction toward environmental sustainability, based on a circular economy.

“InsectERA has 4 vertical axes: InFood, InFeed, InIndustry and InBioremediation. This project will turn over the insect potential application in many different areas!”

InsectERA aims to enable the industrialization and commercialization of innovative products based on insects, both in the food area (animal and human food), as well as in other industries (cosmetics or bioplastics) or in the innovative sector of bioremediation.

The Mobilizing Agenda covers the entire innovation cycle, from R&D to the manufacture and marketing of products on the market, relying on technologically advanced production. It represents a set of projects and business initiatives aimed at promoting the circular economy and leveraging the development of new products, services and solutions with high added value.

Among the Agenda's general objectives are the creation of three new factories for the production of products derived from insects, the creation of a chitosan production factory, and a logistics center, where it is expected to generate 150 new jobs. Investments in construction or adaptation works, acquisition of production, processing, and biodigestion equipment, quality control laboratory equipment, packaging and installation of solar panels are also included. With this investment program, it is expected to reach the industrialization of at least 100 new insect-based products, processes and services for the market.

Outputs from the InsectERA agenda

  • Implementation of a project to promote business training;

  • Characterization and monitoring of the market in terms of products, processes, and technologies competing with the products to be developed in the project;

  • Carrying out prior research and identification of any conflicting Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), as well as mapping existing companies along the value chain of insects;

  • Creation of a dynamic catalog of salable products and technologies resulting from each of the pillars of the project in an online format;

  • Investment in boosting the online and international projection of the products, services, and processes provided for in this Mobilizing Agenda.

The INSECTERA consortia is part of the Mobilising Agendas for Business Innovation, framed in the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). More information about the projec can be found at https://www.insectera.pt/.
