From the Classroom to the Lab: High School Internship at the BioProt Lab

From July 8 to 12, we had the pleasure of welcoming Rui Brito, a high school student, at our lab.

During the one-week internship, Rui got a firsthand look at the world of scientific research. Under the guidance of Elsa Brandão, Lisete Silva, and Inês Emanuel, he focused on studying how polyphenols from beverages interact with components of the oral cavity.

Rui was one of the selected students to enroll in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, an initiative of the Departmenf of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DQB) from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto. This one-week initiative aims to provide high school students with a unique opportunity to experience scientific research as part of a research team.

The school program is designed to highlight the importance of several scientific fields, including Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. It also aims to give students a better understanding of the opportunities available in these fields and how they contribute to the well-being and progress of society.

This internship was supported by the ERC grant BeTASTy (GA 101040462).
